This work, titled Paysage à l’Estaque, was painted shortly after the first Fauvist exhibition at the Salon d’Automne debuting works by Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Derain. Known for their bold use of non-naturalistic colour and expressive dabs of paint, the Fauves were foundational in the shift toward abstract art.
