Said to bring prosperity, strength, and safe travel over water, the Hei Matau (fish hook) is an integral motif across Māori art as it symbolises the powerful connection to the ocean and respect for the great god of the sea Tangaroa. This beautifully carved pounamu Hei Matau Pendant is hung on an expertly waxed and plaited cord. Imbued with centuries of legendary prestige and revered as taonga (treasure), pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone found in the eponymous Te Wai Pounamu, ‘The Water of Greenstone’, or what is known in English as New Zealand’s South Island.
Each piece of pounamu jewellery has been made by hand and is one of a kind. Variations in the colour and shape of the pounamu stone may occur as a result. This only adds to the unique beauty and character of each piece.
