John Kinder was New Zealand's only 19th century artist who worked with both painting and photography. His achievement in both mediums is considered to be of national significance. John Kinder's New Zealand includes ninety important paintings and photographs by one of the preeminent colonial artists, gathered from key New Zealand collections. This was the first exhibition of Kinder's work to comprehensively unite all of his finest watercolours and photographs, covering every period of his activity as an artist and revealing how much of New Zealand he was familiar with.
