Inspired by a 1911 Cubist exhibition and a move to Paris the following year, Mondrian shifted his attention toward purifying painting and reducing it to its most basic elements: surface, colour, form. This work is a rare surviving sketch of the artist’s, which demonstrates that rather than being formulaic, his geometric compositions were, in fact, intuitive.
