Dick Frizzell Puzzle
Dick Frizzell Puzzle
World famous in New Zealand for his Pop-art portrayals of Kiwi iconography, Auckland’s Dick Frizzell is a painter, printmaker, and legendary creative powerhouse. Born in 1943, Frizzell studied at the University of Canterbury and went on to teach at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland before becoming a full-time artist in the 90s. Best known for his cheeky and cheerful depictions of nostalgic Kiwiana, art aficionados and amateurs alike are sure to recognise Frizzell’s iconic pieces from homes, gift shops, and art galleries all across the motu. With a prolific career spanning over half a century, Frizzell’s broad range of style and subject matter keeps his art feeling fresh – whether a lush countryside landscape or a portrait of Mr Four Square himself.
Just Outside Taumarunui depicts one of many ‘Frizzell landscapes’ that Dick and his wife Jude found during their ‘seek it and shoot it’ expeditions around the country. Driving north out of Taumarunui early in the morning, Jude suddenly exclaimed, ‘there’s one!’ – Dick quickly parked the car, got his camera out, and the vista was captured for perpetuity, adapted for this lithograph. A stylised depiction of a quintessentially ‘Kiwi’ landscape, Just Outside Taumarunui allows us to pause amid the tranquil rivers, forests and sky that we often fleetingly glimpse in a road trip.
