Inspired by glassblowing masters before him and a fascination with modernist painting, Keith Grinter transforms the everyday tumbler into a fluid, vibrant work of art. For Picasso: Designed by Paul Smith, Grinter has created two tumblers inspired by Cubist paintings and collages. Lines and blocks of colour recall classic Cubist fragmented canvases. Grinter uses the shard technique inherited from expert glassblower Keith Mahy to create what he describes as a ‘unique line of painterly glass art’ – vivacious shapes of vivid colour contrasted onto perfectly formed vases, tumblers, and bowls. Having exhibited across Aotearoa in Te Papa, Pātaka and Sarjeant galleries, Grinter remains dedicated to his craft and can be found developing his glassblowing skills and showcasing his masterpieces at his own gallery aptly entitled the Grinter Glass Studio in Whangārei.
