Rehearsal Print
Rehearsal Print
Rehearsal, 1938 by Adele Younghusband was painted during the artist’s Australian sojourn of 1937–40. By that time Younghusband was well established as a painter – she had been a regular exhibitor at the Auckland Society of Arts and a founding member of the Waikato Society of Arts – and as a result she moved to Australia at the age of 59 to pursue further study and new experiences. This linocut depicts two dancing female figures, wearing large skirts with breasts exposed, casting shadows as their bodies move around the space. The patterns that surround the figures create a sense of movement and makes the music that the women are dancing to seem audible.
