Picture Painting Print
A fusion of Māori and Pākehā imagery, in Picture Painting Shane Cotton (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Hine, Te Uri Taniwha) pays tribute to the pot and plant artworks featured frequently throughout wharenui (meeting houses) on the East Coast during periods of unjust land confiscation during the late 19th century. Representative of the complex relationship between appropriation and identity, Picture Painting draws attention to century-old artworks with a subject matter that resonates strongly today: land rights of tangata whenua (people of the land). Take home a piece of Auckland Art Gallery’s extraordinary Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art exhibition when you proudly display your very own New Zealand-made print of Shane Cotton’s Picture Painting.
