In the introspective Reading, 1921, a woman’s face is obscured by shadow as she reaches to turn the page of a book, leaving the viewer curious about the story inside. Reading dates from a difficult period in Maud Sherwood’s life, but the artist persevered, continuing to paint during her brief marriage and punishing divorce, which was finalised in 1922. By the 1930s she had become one of the leading ‘women painters’ in Sydney and an important voice on modern art. ‘Nothing can be stationary’, Sherwood declared, ‘I think that modern art has done a great deal as a stage of evolution. It has done much to clear up and simplify matters; it has helped to purify colour and to quicken and enliven art.’
