Turkish Bath Print
Turkish Bath Print
Turkish Bath was painted around 1930 by New Zealand artist Eileen Mayo. The theme of the Turkish Bath was popular among 19th-century artists, most notably the French painter Ingres. Typically, these male artists – many of whom had never visited the Middle East or a Turkish bath – infused their works with heavy eroticism, Orientalism and exaggerated sensuality, and placed a strong focus on the female nude. Mayo’s painting, while it depicts the same subject matter, does so in a less sexualised way: the three female forms are shown relaxing, fanning themselves, sleeping and resting. In Mayo’s scene there is more of a focus on intricate patterns and hair texture than on the nude form itself.
