Picasso Femme au Chapeau Raye Print
Picasso Femme au Chapeau Raye Print
Although a distorted representation, this bust of a woman may be a reference to Dora Maar, recognisable by her brown hair and her fondness for hats. The volumes of her head and torso are indicated by fine parallel lines rather than shading. While Maar’s set mouth and anxious eyes within a twisted muti-planar face suggest profound disquiet, relating to the political context leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War, a vibrant use of colour brings a decorative joy and brilliance to her presence.
An anti-fascist activist, Maar played a decisive role in Picasso’s political engagement, particularly in the creation of his masterpiece Guernica, 1937.
