Picasso La Lecture Print
Picasso La Lecture Print
Following his first meeting with Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1927, when she was 17, Picasso painted her repeatedly as a serene and sensual figure. On several occasions Picasso depicted Walter in different shades of purple and in rounded forms.
In 1931, the artist devoted numerous sculptures to Walter, but in 1932 he began the year with a series of monumental paintings of her, including this work, which shows her in frontal and profile view simultaneously. Her figure appears as a web of interweaving lines and coloured areas, that meshes body and chair into an organic whole. This overlapping of planes creates a new perspective typical of Picasso’s reinterpretation of Cubism in the 1930s.'
