Born within the Russian empire in what is now Latvia at the turn of the 20th century, Mark Rothko immigrated with his family to Portland, Oregon, when he was 10 years old. Educated at Yale University and the Arts Students League in New York, the artist had eliminated recognisable objects from his work by 1949, developing his signature compositional style of soft-edged rectangular shapes stacked above one another. With its closely keyed fields of burgundy, green and dark green appearing to dissolve into a pulsating, dark jungle green mist, Untitled, 1960 is a striking example of Rothko’s mature work. By 1960, Rothko repeatedly used black and maroon pigments in his compositions. While some scholars believe this darker colour palette reflected Rothko’s deepening depression, others view it as a self-imposed, formal limitation that enabled the artist to explore the paradox of darkness generating light.
